Spiritual Support
for People With AIDS
A yearly retreat for persons living with HIV/AIDS and their caregivers is sponsored by the Synod of the Covenant's Work Team on AIDS Ministry.
Established in the fall of 1990 with Bicentennial Funds, the group originally focused on education. Then realizing that education was being done by others, they decided to focus on an area that was not being addressed-spirituality. The "Together Now' retreats provide a safe, non-judgmental, loving environment in which participants receive emotional and spiritual support as well as useful information through workshops and lectures.
The first retreat in 1992 had 30-40 participants; in 1998 there were more than 100. Workshops are offered on such topics as Oral/Dental Health, Creative Ways to Deal With Losses, Self-Empowerment, Journaling, Meditation and Spirituality, and Long-Term Survivors. Worship service, including the serving of Communion, are a highlight for those who no longer feel welcome in their own churches.
