For Year 1998 - AIDS: Under 12: 22 Cases Reported
Under 19: 37 Cases Reported
20 to 49: 4,159 Cases Reported
HIV: The above numbers do not reflect all the
people who are HIV+. There is no way of
knowing how many people carry the HIV
virus since only 10% know they have it. You
can take the number of AIDS cases and
multiply it by 10 to get the approximate
number of people with HIV.
PERMIAN BASIN: From 01/01/99 to 09/30/99 - AIDS Cases Reported:
Total Reported: 20 - 3 were ages 20-29
6 were ages 30-39
In 1998 -
Total Reported: 20 - 5 were ages 20-29
8 were ages 30-39
These are numbers that were "Reported" during these periods. There are between 200 to 400 people who are living with AIDS in the Permian Basin. There are many more who are living in the Permian Basin who are HIV+. Many are not reported in any of these counties.
Remember that someone can have the HIV virus for "up to" 15 years before ever getting sick and having AIDS. Therefore, we know that a large number of people who have AIDS contracted the virus as young as 8 and 10 years old.
WORLDWIDE :
An estimated 20 million are infected with HIV. This number is up 20% from last year.
